This is the holofoil Gyarados, card #7 of 130 from the 2000 Base Set 2, in English. It is a PSA 9 Mint in the original PSA slab (cert 45000212).

Base Set 2 pulled the strongest cards from Base Set and Jungle into a single 130-card release, and Gyarados is one of its best-known holos. This is a Stage 1 Water Pokémon with 100 HP that evolves from Magikarp, illustrated by Mitsuhiro Arita. It is a reprint of the original Gyarados rather than a new design, so collectors tell it apart by the Base Set 2 symbol and the 7/130 number.

On a holo from this set, foil scratching, centering and edge wear decide the grade, and the photos show how this copy reads in the slab. The grade confirms condition; the photos show how it presents.

Gyarados #7 Base Set 2 FAQ

How is this different from the Base Set Gyarados?

Same character and artwork, different release. This is the Base Set 2 printing, numbered 7/130 with the Base Set 2 symbol. The Base Set version has its own set number, and the two trade separately, so match the set and number before you compare against any sold comp.

How scarce is a PSA 10 on this card?

81 PSA 10s out of 2,833 graded PSA 7 and up, about 3%, while PSA 9s are roughly 31% of that group. The 10 is the genuine scarcity tier, so look at recent sold comps for both grades to see what the spread is worth to you.

What should I inspect on a holo from this set?

Holofoil surface first: scratches and print lines show under angled light and are the most common reason a copy misses a 10. Then centering, corners and edge whitening on the back. PSA 9 allows minor flaws, so the photos matter more than the number.

Are the pop numbers exactly PSA’s?

They come from public PSA population data and are dated on this page. The count of cards graded higher is checked against PSA’s own cert page, but counts move as new cards are graded, so check psacard.com/pop for current figures before relying on them for a purchase decision.

How do I verify this slab?

Enter cert number 45000212 at psacard.com/cert and match the card name, set, number and grade to the label and photos. Then inspect the case for cracks, scuffs or any sign of tampering.
